Dawn of Heroes is a tactical RPG from Wicked Studios and Majesco. You’ll be able to check it out for yourself when it releases next month, but Majesco was kind enough to offer us a preview build, as long as a brief interview on the with Wicked Studios president (and executive producer on Dawn of Heroes) Yves Borderleau. While we’re still hammering out our preview (look for it tomorrow!), have a look at our Q&A session after the break.

Greg Johnson has been in the game industry for a long time. Having designed 16-bit Sega icons ToeJam & Earl way back in the early 90s and now running Humanature Studios, he’s seen his creation rise to fame and subsequently slip into gaming history as the years ticked by. But last summer, when Sega created a poll tasking fans with selecting the next Genesis title to get the XBLA treatment, ToeJam & Earl popped back up on our industry’s collective radar by taking the gold.
But it’s not so simple! Johnson says Sega may have “got ahead of themselves a little bit” with that announcement “and didn’t realize that they don’t have the rights to the property.” Apparently, Johnson assures us, “it’s an easy mistake to make.” This same shortcoming is also the reason why the characters will not be appearing in the upcoming Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, though showing up as DLC is still a possibility. “TJ&E will not be included … and the option for including them as downloadable content is still open,” Johnson said. “Sega said they’re not ready to talk about that yet because they haven’t started making any definite plans, but they promised to give me a shout when they get there – so hopefully we’ll be able to work something out.”
More interesting yet, it seems that Mr. Johnson shopped around the idea for a Nintendo DS multiplayer ToeJam & Earl game – though his pitch unfortunately met with deaf ears at “pretty much all of [the game publishers].” Check out some images of what could have been in the gallery below and continue past the break for more from our conversation with Greg Johnson.

Nintendo has unloaded a pair of TV spots for upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii and they’re pretty slick. Each features a foursome of gamers playing the new Nintendo title while surrounded in what seems to be a convergence of the Mushroom Kingdom and reality — not unlike the plot of the horrible 1993 film. Unlike that movie, however, these ads are entirely watchable.
But, before you boot up your Wii and check ‘em out for yourself, head past the break to see the rest of this week’s Nintendo Channel content.

It’s a very exciting day for Nintendo downloads, thanks to one very
thrilling two-wheeler. But
Excitebike World Rally is far from the only offering this week. In fact, there are multiple games available for WiiWare, Virtual Console, and DSiWare, which seems like a rare feat for Nintendo of America. Head past the break to see if any of the other new games
excite you.

Square Enix recently chose to attack with its annual earnings report, and among the 12-page PDF file’s barrage of numbers, things look pretty good for the company. Net sales for the six months ending September 30, 2009 were up 33 percent over the same period last year to 91 billion yen ($1 billion), while operating income was also up by 39 percent to 13 billion yen ($144.5 million) over the same period last year. It’s not all roses and Dragon Quest IX sales, however — net income was down almost 58 percent to 2.7 billion yen ($30 million).
The statement also talks about the acquisition and assimilation of Eidos in direct proportion to Square Enix’s games group division — which includes video games across all platforms and online games for personal computers. Through the aid of titles like Batman: Arkham Asylum, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and the aforementioned Dragon Quest IX, the games division rose its net sales and operating income by 117 percent and 63 percent to 4.8 billion yen ($53 million) and 1.0 billion yen ($11 million), respectively.
As for the company’s upcoming darling, Final Fantasy XIII, Square Enix prez Yoichi Wada spoke about concern regarding the title’s projected domestic sales. Basically, he’s not concerned at all! “PS3 sales continue to increase. We’re bundling PS3 and FFXIII, and can expect even further sales increases. Orders for FFXIII are definitely not bad,” he said. While he didn’t reiterate anything as bold as six million, Wada did claim that the game is expected to sell in the millions.

Video games and Lego go together like peanut butter and chocolate. We’ve seen wonderfully bricky homages to Donkey Kong and cuddly little Pokemon, an ingenious way to make your own Zapper and even recreations of other Nintendo consoles — and now, a full NES set courtesy of MOCpages.
Not only does it come with two controllers and a Lego cartridge, but the builder even went so far as to create a TV and mock gameplay. But, that’s not even the kicker: the thing even has a working cartridge slot and power and reset buttons! Head on over to MOCpages to check it out.

The box design for the Japanese
DSi LL has shown up on Amazon.co.jp, and, as usual, it is classy and fairly minimalist, featuring little more than a picture of the hardware on a white background.
We’re childish enough to be amused by the fact that the whole DSi LL doesn’t fit on the box. You know, because it’s so big. Look how much room is on the DSi box! Somehow, despite not fitting on the box, the DSi LL fits in the box — we can only assume it’s in there disassembled like an IKEA desk.

Namco Bandai has reported a net loss of ¥6.04 billion ($66.7 million) for the first half of its fiscal year, which began in April. During the same period last year, the company posted a net income of ¥1.28 billion ($14.14 million). Despite this year’s first-half hiccup, the publisher still expects to earn ¥8.5 billion ($93.6 million) in net income by the end of its fiscal year (ending March 31, 2010). After all, there are those 2.5 million copies of
Tekken 6 waiting to be sold.
Namco Bandai’s software sales for the period were led by the Ben 10 franchise, as Alien Force and Protector of the Earth combined to sell approximately 810,000 units (not exactly Guitar Hero numbers, eh?). Even with Tekken 6 in its second-half roster, Namco must be pulling for a miracle. But then, the holidays are a magical time.

Nintendo’s new
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks trailer (after the break) reveals a more exciting innovation than the whole
train thing: You’re not exactly rescuing Zelda in this game. In fact, she travels with you the whole time … in spirit!
In one of the craziest Zelda trailers we’ve ever seen, some wizard shows up and turns Zelda into a ghost, and then she sort of mopes around as an apparition until some guy with wheels suggests that she go on a road trip with Link. If you were wondering how Link could gain control of the Phantoms in this upcoming DS game, it’s not through a musical instrument he finds in a treasure chest (the usual Zelda route), but rather it’s because Princess Zelda possesses them.
